Medical entomologist Gregory Lanzaro has directed the UC Mosquito Research Program since June 2002, and the UC Davis Center for Vectorborne Diseases since January 2006. He came to UC Davis from the Department of Pathology, University of Texas, Medical Branch, Galveston. Dr. Lanzaro served as a post-doctoral fellow with the UC Davis Department of Entomology from 1988-1990. He received his Ph.D. in entomology from the University of Florida, Gainesville. His expertise includes genetics and the population biology of mosquitos that transmit malaria. His research focus includes population and molecular genetics of insect vectors of human disease, with an emphasis on malaria in Africa, and molecular genetics and immunology of insect vector salivary proteins. Dr. Lanzaro's expertise also includes the Culex mosquito, the principal vector of West Nile disease, and the sand fly, vector of Leishmaniasis.
