mosquito and map of CaliforniaThe UC Mosquito Research Program supports research among the various academic departments and research organizations in the biology and control of mosquitoes and other vectors and vector-borne diseases.

The main purpose of this research is to develop information, materials, and techniques to assist state and local agencies in protecting the citizens of California from vectors and vector-borne diseases.

Goals

The primary goal of the UC Mosquito Research Program is to conduct research which will provide improved methods of managing pest and disease-transmitting mosquitoes, thereby protecting the citizens of California from mosquito-borne disease and discomfort from mosquito bites. Emphasis of the Program is on principles of integrated pest management, including practical biological control strategies and other approaches which are not disruptive to the environment. Proposals will be considered in the following categories:

  • Chemical control methods (including application technology)
  • Mosquito biology and ecology
  • Integrated pest management (including biological control)
  • Public health

These categories are not meant to be exclusive and any proposal would qualify that fits within the primary program goal as stated above.

Review Process

Research proposals submitted to MRP undergo a 3-tiered system of review. The Mosquito Research Program Grants Review Committee reviews each proposal in detail for technical merit. This committee reviews each proposal in detail, but primarily for relevance to Mosquito Abatement District operational problems. The Public Advisory Committee evaluates the overall review process, and advises on goals and administration of the program. The Public Advisory Committee also reviews the recommendations for approval and funding of proposals developed by the program director on the basis of recommendations developed by Mosquito Research Program Grants Review Committee and the Mosquito and Vector Control Association of California Research Committee.
